(ABC 6 News) - The Red Wing Wingers are heading to the girls' hockey state tournament for the first time since 2015.
The Wingers, the top-seed in the Section 1A girls hockey tournament, defeated the second-seeded Lourdes Eagles in Thursday's Section 1A Championship, 4-1, advancing to the Class A State Girls Hockey Tournament for the 7th time since 2009.
The Wingers were led by future Minnesota Golden Gopher Taylor Heise, who scored two of the Wingers' four goals in the win.
"Penalties hurt us early in the game, they got some momentum and got some good goals," Eagles head coach Jeff True said. "Credit to them, tip your hat to Taylor Heise, she's a heck of a player. You can try to shut her down, but it's impossible to stop great players, and she's a great player."
In their first year as a stand-alone program, the Eagles fell one win short of advancing to the state tournament.
