(ABC 6 News) – Heart-pounding, nerve-wracking, thrilling, emotional, exhilarating, whichever way you want to describe it, followers and fans of the RCTC Yellowjackets volleyball team felt all those emotions on Thursday.
The Yellowjackets, the no.4 seed in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament, defeated no.5 seed Rock Valley College in four games in the national quarterfinals, 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25). Every set in the match was decided by six points or less.
Overall, there were 15 lead changes in the four games—eight of those lead changes came in game three alone. In the match, Rock Valley led by nine points in game two, which was the largest overall lead of the match on Thursday.
MCAC Southern Division Player of the Year and Hayfield graduate Carrie Rutledge shined once again for RCTC, leading all players with 25 kills in the match. Rutledge ended games three and four with kills.
St. Charles graduate Brekkin McCready added a match-high 48 assists and 18 digs. Mariah Steinbach contributed with a match-high 5 block aces.
Next up, the Yellowjackets will face top-seeded Owens Community College in the national semifinals. RCTC and Owens will begin match play at 5 p.m. on Friday at RCTC.
