P-E-M Offensive Line

(ABC 6 News)- The Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs football team had quite the challenge this regular season, winning just two of their eight games.  The team was unable to score more than two touchdowns in seven of their eight games, but finally, things have turned around for the offense, winning in both the quarterfinals and the semifinals of the Section 1AAA playoffs, now fighting for a Section title.

"At the start of the year we had a lot of false starts, a lot of holding, a lot of dumb penalties that were quite preventable, and we've cleaned those up,” Senior Guard Austin Rother said.  “Our backs are running even harder than they did in the regular season.”

The team has been focusing on fixing those penalties by doing extra work in practice.

"We run a lot of drills where we practice starts, stances, getting off the ball not jumping too early, listening to the count, just a lot of little stuff,” Junior Left Guard Gus Ruiz said.

“When we do little things right that's when big things happen,” Rother said.

And big things are happening, P-E-M upset both the three-seeded Stewartville Tigers and the two seeded Byron Bears, pushing them to the Section 1AAA finals.

“We've got to keep playing like we have been in the last two games because those have been our best games of the season by far,” Rother said.  “If we keep that rolling I think we got a good shot.”

“Without your offensive and defensive line your team is nothing,” Head Coach Kevin Lamb said.  “I actually joked around with them, when you got the right blocking, my grandmother can run the ball.”

The P-E-M Bulldogs have a chance to end their six year drought to state this Saturday.  They will face the one seeded Lourdes Eagles for the Section 1AAA title on Saturday at 8p.m. at Rochester Regional Sports Stadium.
