(ABC 6 News) - The Mabel-Canton volleyball team has won every single set they've played this season, thanks to strong leaders like senior Payton Danielson.
Danielson loved volleyball from a young age.
"When I was young my aunt played and I watched her play and I loved seeing her play back row," Danielson said. "So I knew I always wanted to play."
Danielson has done her part, contributing to the Cougars' streak of 22 straight conference titles. However, that isn't enough for the outside hitter.
"We're looking to go to the state tournament. It's something I've wanted ever since I started playing and we definitely have the team that can do it. But we need to work hard and get there first."
Head Coach Lonnie Morken is confident in this year's team, and confident in what Danielson brings to the table. Despite being undersized, she has almost 500 career kills and 1,161 digs-- the fifth most in Mabel-Canton history. Her production doesn't come as a shock to Morken.
"She knows that her hitting window isn't as large as a 5-10, 5-11 girl, so she has really got to hit her shots. She's explosive off the ground and she just doesn't make a lot of errors," Morken said.
While her numbers and play have put herself in the Cougar record books, her character is what sets her apart says Morken.
"Whether she is in the weight room or on the court or on the softball field or basketball court or whatever, she is the hardest worker. She certainly sets the table as far as the work ethic and the effort in practice."
