(ABC 6 News) - The Austin Packers are 6-1 on the season, thanks in large part to the stellar play of sophomore Hope Dudycha.
Dudycha is young, but has made a huge impact on the court for the Packers. She leads the team in scoring, and has been efficient as the focal point of the offense, shooting 48 perfect from the field.
"When you see her, she's not a very intimidating person. Short in stature. But then you give her a ball and you watch her run the floor; she's very athletic," Head Coach Eric Zoske said.
Dudycha started basketball a little late, picking up the sport in fourth grade. But she took to it quickly, and has been playing with the high school since seventh grade. Playing AAU basketball in the summer, traveling all over the state, has helped her develop her skills.
Playing basketball in the offseason has brought her game to the next level, and also allowed her to play at a high level year-round. That fast-paced play is used for the Packers as well.
"The first thing we want to do is run in transition," Zoske said. "Hope is fantastic at that."
As the point guard, Dudycha plays a pivotal roll on the court. But she has also been given a roll unusual for someone her age: captain. The team recognized her skills and dedication and named her captain this season.
The Packers are hoping to make it back to the state tournament after winning the section title last season. Austin could be set for the next few years with Dudycha anchoring the team.
