(ABC 6 News) – To the surprise of very few Southeastern Minnesota boys’ soccer enthusiasts, 80 minutes wasn’t enough to determine Thursday’s Section 1A Championship Game.
Through the two halves of regulation, the Lourdes Eagles and Austin Packers were both held scoreless in their Section 1A Championship Dual.
In overtime, Austin senior midfielder Caleb Simerson proved to be the hero, scoring three minutes into the sudden-death period, and sending the Packers to their second consecutive Class A state boys soccer tournament.
"It just went off the crossbar, it was open for me," Simerson recalled. "I went and gave it my all got ahead on it and it just went in."
The win marked the Packers’ second section championship victory over Lourdes (Austin beat Lourdes in 2017 for the section title, 2-1). Both programs played for the Section 1A title in 2015 as well, and by virtue of a goal in double-overtime, Lourdes edged Austin, 1-0.
"They maintained their composure, they kept after it," Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. "We had a number of opportunities in the second half where it could have just gone in, but you know you got to shake those off and say 'ok just keep going just keep going,' that's it."
Austin will await their Class A state tournament fate, as it is still yet to be determined who, when, and where the Packers will begin state tournament action against. Last season, Austin advanced to the Class A state semifinals before falling to St. Thomas Academy in double overtime, 4-3.
