(ABC 6 News) – Albert Lea's varsity wrestling senior captain, Nic Cantu, may not be the most vocal, but his actions speak volumes.
“He’s a great teammate overall, he’s not one to bring a person down, he’s the one to build them up,” Cantu’s longtime teammate, Brady Nielsen, said.
State-ranked and a varsity veteran, Cantu’s commitment to his team and craft show through the hard work he puts in both on and off the mat.
“He’s always one of the first guys in, comes to all the optional workouts, he’s in in the mornings” Albert Lea’s head coach Paul Durbahn said. “He’s putting in that extra work and it pays off.”
Over the weekend, it really did pay off. The Tigers faced fourth-ranked St. Michael-Albertville and defeated them 30-20. One key to Albert Lea’s success was Cantu’s pin on opponent Travis Smith.
“It shows out on the mat how much you can improve by doing extra things and working hard,” Cantu said.
After graduating high school, Cantu will continue his wrestling career at St. Cloud State University and couldn't be more excited.
“I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to wrestle in college for a Division II school and I can’t wait to start wrestling in college.”
Before he heads off to college though, he has a few more things to tackle, one of them being the post-season.
“He’s put together a great season, he’s had some ups and downs, but he’s going to peak at the right moment and we’ll see good things from Nic here in the postseason,” Durbahn said.
Next up, Cantu and the Tigers will finish their regular season on Thursday against Northfield.
