(ABC 6 NEWS) - It's a form of protest that has become more commonplace on one of the nation's largest stages.
Now, a local veteran's organization is fighting back.
"The flag symbolizes the ideal of America, the freedom that we fought for” veteran Dave Thul said. “The national anthem symbolizes the war that we fought in order to secure those freedoms."
It's an act that draws almost as much air time as the game itself. And now the Owatonna VFW has a message for those doing it ... not here."
“NFL games where we have players that disrespect the flag during the national anthem really don't have any business being show in a veterans of foreign wars hall" VFW member Dave Thul told us. So he proposed an idea that won the support of other veterans ... players, if you show that disrespect ...
"We'll switch channels to something else. These guys are role models, which means they have a bigger microphone a bigger audience at their disposal than most of us will ever have in our lives" Dave Thul explained.
“If that's your role model, then you're going to act the way they act" added Heather, who said she’s 100 percent behind the new VFW policy.
“So they don't have to express and try to make their point during the national anthem" Dave Thul told us.
“Many people have fought hard, died, everybody's sacrificing for the freedoms that we have and I think it's very important to show respect for those people” Heather added.
Other VFW and American Legion chapters around the country have adopted the "change the channel" policy.
"This isn't an issue of politics of whether we agree or disagree with what the players are trying to do” Dave Thul explained, “it's a matter of expressing yourself at the right time and at the right place."
