(ABC 6 News) - The Mayo Spartans went 6-4 last season, and are pushing to put themselves in a position for a state run.
The Spartans lost to eventual state champion Owatonna in the second round of sections last season. They have been a solid team for the last decade, sticking right about the .500 mark each year. But for Head Coach Donny Holcomb, he is looking for this team to push themselves to the next level.
"We have the athletes at Mayo High School. But the kids also need to know if we're going to get better than a .500 or a one game better than .500 record, we got to have kids that know how to play the game of football and are willing to put the work in to be better than just average."
It is still early, but the team is already confident in how they can put wins together this season.
"Asa Cummings and DeMonte Simmons I think will be really explosive in our backfield this year. It will be really fun to watch them and play with them," senior quarterback Cade Sheehan said.
Mayo opens the season at home against Northfield on August 30.
