(ABC 6 News) – Close to two weeks after the Lourdes Eagles girls hockey team finished one win short of the state tournament, the boys' hockey team followed suit with a championship game loss.
Mankato East topped Lourdes on Wednesday at the Rochester Recreation Center, 6-1, claiming the Section 1A championship. Eagles senior Luke Newman scored the game’s opening goal in the first period, and the Cougars responded with six unanswered goals—one in the first period, followed by three goals in the second and two more in the third.
“We didn't have a four check to stop their breakout,” Lourdes co-head coach Joe Knoepke said. “Hats off to them they came to play they were ready, certainly I think us as coaches have to be held accountable for this one as well for not having them prepared to stop those rushes they kept getting against us.”
In their first postseason under Knoepke and fellow co-head coach Bryan Frischmann, the 5th-seeded Eagles upset no.4 seed Mankato West in the 1A quarterfinals, 3-1, then followed that with an upset win over the top-seeded Albert Lea Tigers in overtime, 3-2.
The Cougars will open Class A boys hockey tournament play next week at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
