(ABC 6 News) - It's been a tough couple of years for the Lyle/Pacelli Athletics, but with a new head coach, and a lot of new players, they are looking forward to the upcoming season.
"It's really about building their confidence back up and making them understand we have the kids to be successful, we just need to get our first win," head coach Brad Walter said.
Coach Walter may be new to this position, but not new to this program. He's been around the Athletics for a number of years and has watched some of these players since youth football.
Heading into this season, the Athletics have a good combination of returning and new players, which Coach said has helped create a new mindset.
With over 25 players on the gridiron, which is a pretty good size for 9-man football, Coach adds that the competition level has gone up considerably.
The team is welcoming back a few players from last season and one of those key players is three-year starting QB Jed Nelson, who Coach said is a great focus point for the team.
With experience in the QB spot, and a new vibe, the Athletics are ready to get a win.
"We have to work for it," Nelson said. "It's not going to be given to us. So, we just have to come in and work hard every day and I think it'll happen."
With weeks of practicing, running drills and plays, the Athletics have to lock-in and translate what they accomplish in practice to game day.
"If we can do what we want and what we do in practice, I think we can execute in games and try to win some games," junior Zach Bollingberg added.
The Athletics take on the LeRoy-Ostrander Cardinals in their season opener. The game is set for Friday in LeRoy at 7 p.m.
