(ABC 6 News)- The four-time State Football Champions, Rochester Lourdes Eagles took home their third straight section 1AAA title on Saturday winning over the Dover-Eyota Eagles 13-0.
It was a slow-moving first half, Lourdes kept Dover-Eyota scoreless, and the Lourdes Eagles were only able to put up six points.
The rainy conditions put a damper on the passing game and kept it low scoring into the second-half. Lourdes’ senior full back Jake Groteboear had a one-yard run in the third quarter to put Rochester ahead 13-0.
"That was a big deal, it turned the momentum of the game around, that really changed it for us," Groteboer said. "It was the toughest game of the year for us, but it was good that we were able to overcome adversity."
Dover-Eyota was hoping to snap their 18-year drought to state; the Eagles only made three state tournament appearances (1992, 1998, and 2000), in school history, but Lourdes didn't give them a chance.
"We should've had more points the first half, but we responded in the second half." Lourdes Head Coach Mike Kesler said. "We had a great drive to start the second half, which is nice. Defensively, again, we got it done."
The Class AAA State Football Tournament begins on Saturday, November 10. The Lourdes Eagles are set to face Jordan High School on Saturday at Hopkins High School, kickoff is set for 12 p.m. To see the full Class AAA State brackets, click here.
