(ABC 6 News) - The Lourdes girls hockey team came away with a tremendous 2-1 overtime win over South St. Paul to open the state tournament on Wednesday, thanks to a two-goal performance by senior Emma Schmitz.

The Eagles were locked in on defense all game, controlling the Packers, a team they lost to 8-2 earlier in February.

While the Packers defense was quiet early on, the Eagles weren't going to wait to get on the scoreboard. In the first period Schmitz cruised through the defense and switched to her backhand before giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

From there, it was the Corrin Hanson show. The senior goalie was a brick wall, posting two scoreless periods and was well on her way to a third when South St. Paul's Brynn Sexauer fired a shot to the top corner with three and a half to play in regulation to tie things up.

For the second year in a row, the Eagles were heading to overtime. After their late goal, the Packers looked like they had momentum on their side. The only problem: they didn't have Schmitz on their side.

Just 53 seconds into overtime the Sacred Heart University commit turned on the jets, skating through the defense and burying the game-winner. The Eagles earned a 2-1 win, and a chance to play top-seeded Breck at 1:30 pm on Friday.
