(ABC 6 News) - The Rochester Lourdes Eagles softball team is making history this season. Just over a week ago, the Eagles advanced to their first state tournament in program history and on Thursday they advanced to the Class AA title game.
The 2019 State Softball Tournament began in North Mankato on Thursday morning and the Eagles have made their mark. In the Class AA quarterfinals, the second-seed Eagles faced the Annandale Cardinals.
The Cardinals were first on the board, then in the 3rd inning Linda O'Connell whacks a two-run homer to tie it up. This game went back and forth, and back and forth. Finally in the 7th, the Eagles were up 8-3. The Cardinals score three more runs, but Anna Taylor, and the Eagles defense shuts it down to advance to the Class AA semifinals.
Fast forward to their later game, the Eagles faced the three-seed Pipestone Area Arrows in the semifinals. Anna Taylor is back in the circle for the Eagles, after throwing a complete game in the quarterfinals.
In the 3rd inning, the Eagles scores and take the first lead of the game. Taylor does her thing and keeps the Arrow's scoreless until the 7th, but the Eagles outlasted the Arrows, winning 2-1. Next stop, the championship game.
"That second game was much much better than our first performance," Eagles head coach Becky Macken said. "I give a lot of credit to Anna, she pitched a great game. The [team] made some super adjustments again like they did in the first game.
Ahead of Friday's championship game, Coach Macken said they are going to review their video and stats from Thursday, and put together a good game plan for the girls.
"Heck we've never been here but we're going to give it our best shot."
The Eagles will face top-seed Norwood-Young America on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
