(ABC 6 News) - Lourdes' run for a state title came to an end Friday afternoon, as the fifth-seed Eagles faced defending champions, No. 1 Breck, in the Class A semifinals where they fell 9-1.

These teams squared off in the regular season where the Mustangs edged out a 6-5 win, but state brought a different type of intensity.

"The experience shows they've got girls who are used to playing in this tournament," Eagles Head Coach Jeff True said about Breck's comfort. "We've got a great group of girls who worked their butts off, but sometimes the experience outweighs that."

Breck took a 2-0 lead in the first period and they continued to add to it in the second. Lourdes was trailing 5-0 halfway through when they finally got something going. Senior Sarah Dravis got the puck off the boards, it deflected and found its way between the pipes. That was the Eagles one and only goal of the game.

"Once we realized we could skate with them, that we could play with them, we got the goal, that we had a powerplay 5-on-3, we thought if we could just get one in now some momentum could change."

Coach True added one of his teams bigger problems was they couldn't sustain pressure long enough.
"We would have two or three decent shifts, we'd have the puck in their end, [but] our forecheck just wasn't moving the way it was a few nights ago or at the end of the season."

Breck added four more goals in the third to win 9-1 to advance to the Class A championship to defend their title. A tough loss for the Eagles, but one that can learn from.

"We did taste that momentum and we can build on that," True said following the game. "There's little things to take away. A 9-1 score doesn't showcase how good these girls are at playing hockey. It's the result we didn't want but we'll move on and be ready to go tomorrow."

Lourdes will play for third place on Saturday against second-seed Warroad. Game is set for a 9 a.m. start at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
