(ABC 6 News) - The Lourdes Eagles girls basketball team is state-bound after edging the Goodhue Wildcats 50-46 in the Section 1AA championship game.
This title game featured two powerhouse, state-ranked teams (three-seed Goodhue, top-seed Lourdes), and it showed throughout the game. A close, defensive battle in the first half, where the Eagles led 18-14 at halftime.
After the break, the Eagles started to re-write the narrative. Senior Alyssa Ustby had been neutralized most of the first, then she found her way around the Wildcats defense which helped the Eagles push their lead. Also helping Lourdes, junior Sydney Elliot who showed off her range with a couple of triples.
Then as the Eagles started to pull ahead, the Wildcats came right back. This game came down to the very end, but Lourdes held on and won 50-46 to advance to for the first time in three years.
"We've been working all summer and it's really starting to pay off," Ustby said. "It just makes me so happy to see them knock down those shots and have a big smile on their face. It's just so much fun to enjoy this with them."
Eagles' Head Coach Aaron Berg also expressed that the team just wants to get to the tournament do big things, "so, we're going to practice hard and see what we can do."
Now, the Eagles await their seeding and opponent for the state tournament, which begins Wed., March 11 at the University of Minnesota.
