(ABC 6 News)- The four-time state football champions, Rochester Lourdes Eagles punched their ticket to the Class AAA state championship game for the second time since 2016, with a 25-20 win over top-ranked Pierz Pioneers.
On the kickoff, Pierz returned the ball for a touchdown, but luckily for Lourdes, a penalty was called for a blindside block on Pierz, so it was not ruled a touchdown.
The Eagles scored first in the second quarter with a two-yard run from Zach Jungels to put the Eagles ahead 7-0, but Pierz would respond with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead with 5:51 in the first half. It didn’t take long for Lourdes to get something done, with under four minutes to go in the second quarter, Lourdes scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 13-8 lead. Lourdes went into halftime ahead 15-14.
The third quarter was slow moving for Pierz, Lourdes held the Pioneers scoreless until late in the fourth quarter when Pierz made it a five-point game, Eagles leading 25-20. Pierz would attempt an onside kick with 1:07 remaining in the game, but Lourdes' senior wide receiver, Julian Bretton would recover it, allowing the Eagles to run the clock out.
Eagles' senior running back, Zach Jungles was named MVP of the game, totaling 15 carries for 110 yards and one touchdown, per prepspotlighttv.com.
Lourdes will face the winner of the Perham/Fairmont semifinal game in the Class AAA state championship game on Saturday, November 24 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
