(ABC 6 News) - The LeRoy-Ostrander Cardinals have a good balance of old and new as they gear up for another season in 9-man football.
The team returns most of their 2018 roster and in all they have 27 players, which is the most the program has seen in a while according to first year head coach Trevor Carrier.
Carrier may be new to this position, but not new to the program. For the last six season, he was the team's offensive coordinator.
"It's an easy transition to be honest," Carrier said. "The previous coach, Aaron Hungerholt, did a wonderful job here, previous to me being here. He laid the foundations and we're going to keep building off the things he laid down."
Building off that foundation is developing the team's new leader in the offensive huddle, sophomore QB Chase Johnson.
"We have a new quarterback, it's not going to be easy," Carrier said. "The transition for that might be the most difficult thing for us, but I think he's already made the strides and we're already miles ahead of where we should probably be and that's a credit to our quarterback, our squad and our staff."
Also, giving props to the team's quarterback is senior tight end Tanner Kasel who said Johnson is stepping into the position really well.
"I was pretty nervous at first but my team has a lot of faith in me, which helps out a lot," Johnson said.
The Cardinals open their season on Friday against Lyle/Pacelli. Kick-off is in LeRoy at 7 p.m.
