(ABC 6 News) – For the past seven years, the Lakeville North Panthers and the John Marshall Rockets have met for the Section 1AAAA boys’ basketball championship—and all of those games have had one common denominator.
On Thursday night at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, the Panthers defeated the Rockets, 84-50. It’s the Panthers’ 8th-consecutive Section 1AAAA title, including their 7th straight win over John Marshall.
Thursday’s loss marked the final game for Rockets senior Matthew Hurt. Hurt, who is regarded as one of the nation’s top recruits in the Class of 2019, is the school and city’s all-time leading scorer, and one of the best high school players to ever play in Minnesota. Hurt is also the leading scorer in the state of Minnesota this season.
"It was (a great career)," Hurt said in regards to his career. "It wasn't the way we wanted to end it. We fought hard and did whatever we could."
With the win, the Panthers will play in next week’s Class AAAA state tournament in Minneapolis.
