(ABC 6 News)-  The Chatfield Gophers football team ended the 2016 season with a 2-7 record, their first losing season since 2009.

However this year, they’ve changed things up defensively and strengthened their running game.  Senior running back Kyle Nosbisch is one of those players who adds depth to the backfield.  He returns to the gridiron with the Gophers for his second year as the starting running back and defensive back.

They welcomed me with open arms, they’ve treated me with nothing but respect and I will always be thankful for that,” Nosbisch said.

Nosbisch was a transfer from North Fayette Valley High School in West Union, Iowa and hit the field running.

“With the drive he had last summer he immediately showed up to the weight room.  Working out with the guys they created a quick bond with each other,” Head Coach Jeff Johnson said.

"These are friendships I'm building that I will remember for the rest of my life," Nosbisch said.

“One of the nicest kids I’ve ever coached.  (He is) polite, (has) manners, and then when he gets on the football field, he goes hard,” said Coach Johnson.

The Gophers opened up the 2017 season on Friday, September 1 against the La Crescent Lancers.  Nosbisch had 17 carries for 127 yards, and also scored two touchdowns to help lift his team to a 47-7 win.  Nosbisch expressed how football and each game means to him.

“It’s shaped me a lot, it’s taught me a lot about team work, and working with guys,” Nosbisch added.  “I just (want to) go out and try my hardest in my senior year.  Give it everything I’ve got, don’t leave anything behind.”

Nosbisch will stay close to the game of football following his high school graduation but will not continue to play on the collegiate level, however he aspires to become a football coach.

Nosbisch and the Gophers return to the gridiron on Friday, September 8 in Cannon Falls.  Kickoff is set for 7p.m.
