(ABC 6 News)- The Austin Packers boys soccer team is on a three-game winning streak, and a big reason for the 6-2 record is because of their senior captain and midfielder, Kevin Ortiz.

“Kevin definitely has a lot of talent with the ball at his feet,” Packers Head Coach Jens Levisen said.  “He’s very good at weaving in between different defenders but he also knows where we want to go with the ball too, so he’s able to see that.  He’s very competitive, but he brings a lot of joy to the field too.”

Soccer is more than just a game for Ortiz, he has been playing since he was 8-years-old.

“It means the world to me, to be honest, I’ve played this my entire life,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz has been on the varsity soccer team since his sophomore year, and his experience is paying off.

“He’s a leader for us, he pushes us to do better, gives us pointers, things we can do better and helps out the team in a positive way,” Packers senior midfielder Juan Vera said. “He knows how to control the ball.”

“His skill, knowledge of the game (sets him apart) he gets the ball on his feet in a game and he knows where he’s going he can pick up the ball at half and dribble through half of the other team,” Levisen said.

On Tuesday’s game against the Rockets, Ortiz scored two of the teams five goals.

“The game against John Marshall was his first game starting upfront so for him to get two goals in his first start as a forward as opposed to a central midfielder, was a pretty good thing,” Levisen said.

Ortiz believes it was his teammates and not the position change that allowed him to perform so well against John Marshall.

“It’s my team that makes me stand out without these guys I wouldn’t be as good because these guys are just all talented,” Ortiz said.

“He has the talent to do things individually when he needs to, but he also realizes that ultimately we want the team to score,” Levisen said.

Ortiz and the Packers return to the field on Thursday to host Faribault.  The game is set for 7 p.m. at Wescott Field.
