Kasson-Mantorville Falls in First Round of State Volleyball

November 09, 2017 09:42 PM

(ABC 6 News) – On paper, the Kasson-Mantorville KoMets dominated their first round state volleyball match, minus one key category—the final score.

The Academy of Holy Angels Stars, the no.4 seed in the Class AA volleyball tournament, topped the no.5 KoMets in their volleyball match on Thursday in St. Paul, 3-2.

Despite the final outcome, the KoMets registered a better kill-percentage (25.1% for K-M, 18.5% for Holy Angels), less attack errors (18-30), more digs (89-87), and more service aces (8-4) than the Stars.

“The funny thing is, looking at the stat sheet, we beat them in every statistical category,” KoMets head volleyball coach Adam VanOort said. “Every single one. We hit a higher percentage, we had more blocks, we had more digs. The 5th set was just a battle which a few calls and hits went their way, but that’s just how volleyball goes sometimes.”

"We didn't play bad,” KoMets junior setter Abbey Bigelow added. “Sometimes, other teams win, but that's ok. I'm still proud of our team, I think we played great.”

KoMets junior outside hitter Peyton Suess, a 2019 Wake Forest commit, led the KoMets with 32 kills, out-hitting Stars’ right-side hitter Ellie Koontz (24 kills), a 2018 Marquette University commit.

Suess also led the KoMets with 17 digs—teammates Emilee Terry and Caroline Brauin each added 16 apiece, Abbey Bigelow provided 9 digs (and a team-high 49 set assists).

The KoMets will play the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights in the Consolation Bracket back at the Xcel Energy Center on Friday at 5 p.m.
