(ABC 6 News)- The St. Charles boys basketball team is undefeated this season, and one particular player has been crucial to their success.
“I just picked up a basketball when I was in fourth grade, my dad motivated me to keep playing,” Kaden Vaughn said.
Vaughn is a senior guard for the St. Charles Saints basketball team.
“He’s just a hard worker, he comes in every day, doesn't bring in an agenda into the gym, and compliments teammates and shows his work ethic day after day,” Head Coach Terry Knothe said.
Vaughn is the leading scorer on the Saints this season averaging 15 points per game.
“Well he’s tough to guard, he’s got really nice range and he’s developed the ability to get to the rim, so the combination of his range and his ability with pretty good shooting percentage has made him much tougher to guard,” Knothe said.
Vaughn is shooting 35.4% from the field, and 32% from behind the arc.
“I just kept working at it, just always practicing,” Vaughn said.
Kaden believes his team is the reason for his success.
“During practice they push me. They can find me when we’re playing games, and they get me open,” Vaughn said.
“He’s also kind of cagey on defense, so he’s created some things for himself with some steals opportunities on that end of the floor so he’s worked hard on becoming a more complete player,” Knothe said. “He handles success pretty well. He’s the one that wants to get better and he gets along with his teammates, so he’s been a nice player to coach and we’re glad to have him.”
Vaughn and the Saints return to the hardwood on Thursday to face the Pine Island Panthers at home. Tip-off is set for 7:45p.m.
