(ABC 6 News) - In just eight years, Rochester resident Gwen Jacobson achieved her goal of running a Boston-qualifying marathon in all 50 states.
The 61-year-old has a bucket full of medals to show for her hard work, but she is more invested in the memories she's made.
"I did qualify for the 2014 Boston Marathon. And that was the first year after the tragic bombing in Boston," Jacobson said. "And all of these people are cheering for you, somebody they don't even know. The support of the city that year was amazing, so that remains my all-time favorite finish."
If a marathon in all 50 states isn't impressive enough, Jacobson started running just 10 years ago. Who knew training for a charity 5k would turn into a passion that would bring her to new places and new people?
Jacobson completed the journey to 50 on Oct. 20 at the IMT Des Moines Marathon, and was elated to have accomplished something she worked so hard for.
"All is could think was I did it. I actually finished this. It was just the greatest feeling in the world," Jacobson said.
She says she is a goal-oriented person, and already has her next goal: running marathons in Tokyo, Berlin and London to complete the six world majors. After years of training and racing, she has found a home that encourages her to reach new heights.
"I enjoy running so much and I've met such a community of people that to me, running a marathon is just something I do, it's part of who I am now."
