(ABC 6 News) - The Hayfield boys basketball team is playing in their fifth-ever state basketball tournament, and will play their first semifinals game since 2001 Wednesday.
Hayfield Head Coach Chris Pack was a first-year head coach of the 2001 team that finished as the state runner-up. Fast-forward twenty years and he is once again in position to fight for a state title.
"For me the joy is the same. It's all about the kids and giving them experiences and I'm so happy for these guys that they get to experience this; going to the Target Center and playing and being on TV and the opportunity to still win a state championship," Pack said.
The Vikings will play Badger-Greenbush-Middle River in the semifinals at the Target Center at noon on Wednesday. Getting a chance to play in the state championship game is almost within reach for senior Ethan Slaathaug, who was a freshman on varsity three years ago when the Vikings went 5-23.
"The state title, that would definitely be a milestone in my life and something I would remember forever. And just to come back and be able to see that trophy in the trophy case would probably be one of the greatest things ever," Slaathaug said.
