(ABC 6 News) - 1994 Hayfield graduate, Chris Steele, is being inducted into the David Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday.
While in high school, Steele qualified for state three times, taking home titles in 1993 and 1994. Over his lengthy varsity career, he had a record of 144-16-2 with 105 career pins. These statistics are just a snapshot of Steele's decorated run as a Viking.
"It's an honor and I just want to thank whoever got me in," Steele said. "Voted for me and for my teammates. We worked hard at trying to be the best we could be as wrestlers. I couldn't have done that if I didn't have the teammates I had."
Every year, the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association inducts coaches, referees, and athletes to the Hall of Fame. However this year, the induction dinner will be split up into two events because of the pandemic. The first is on May 1 and the second is on Oct. 30. Saturday's event is being held in Benson, MN and making the special trip is Steele's longtime high school coach Dave Erickson, who will also be introducing him.
With the 2021 induction class, Hayfield wrestling will have seven total members in the Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame.
