(ABC 6 News) - The Fillmore Central Falcons girls basketball team is off to state for the first time in program history after upsetting top-seed Blooming Prairie in the Section 1A title game, 69-56.
No. 2 Fillmore Central came out of the locker room hungry and ready. From the start, their defense was all over Blooming Prairie. F-C led 36-24 at halftime.
In the second half, the Blossoms started to rally, cutting the deficit to just three points late in the game. But the Falcons kicked it into high gear in the final minutes to take a double digit lead. Falcons' junior Hope Sexton drilled a three with seconds left on the clock to put this game away.
Fillmore Central wins their first section title 69-56.
"I'm speechless, I don't know," Sikkink said. "I never thought we'd do this, but here it is. We're here."
Following the Falcons' win, Head Coach Levi Olstad talked about how they didn't want to repeat of their semifinal game with Grand Meadow. So, it was about going strong the whole game and finish.
"These seniors and the way these girls work, is just amazing," Olstad said. "I'm very proud of them and everything they've done this season. I couldn't have asked for better girls."
Now, the Falcons await their opponent in the first round of the girls state basketball tournament which begins Wed., March 11.
