(ABC 6 News) - The Fillmore Central Falcons are ready to take the gridiron this year with new leadership under center.
Coming off a 4-5 season, the team will look to junior Zach Haugerud to lead the team as the Falcons new starting quarterback. Toward the end of his sophomore season, Haugerud broke his hand, which halted him from getting some varsity experience during the 2018 football season.
Now, he's healthy and ready to get after it. With Haugerud becoming the new leader in the offensive huddle, head coach Chris Mensink said this year's offense will be balanced.
"He's a very, very smart kid," Mensink said. "[He] makes good reads. So, he's going to be a great leader for us for the next two years."
After dealing with his injury and working his way back, Haugerud said he is ready for the role as QB.
"I'm ready to take it on and do good this year," he added.
The Falcons kick off their 2019 campaign on Friday, Aug. 30 at home when they host United South Central. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. in Harmony.
