(ABC 6 News) - Injuries are never a good thing, especially when they affect veteran key starters on a team.
Unfortunately, St. Charles’ varsity boys’ basketball team knows that narrative all too well.
However, two guys have stepped up for their team, helped fill those gaps and are now the team’s leading scorers. Sophomore basketball standouts Kooper Vaughn and Drew Maloney have been everything and more for the Saints this season.
“As sophomores, they’ve been phenomenal,” Saints head coach Terry Knothe said.
Currently, Vaughn leads the team in total points and steals with 240 and 33, respectively. Right behind him is Maloney with 234 points, who also leads the team in rebounds with 108 boards.
“They would have been hard to displace even if we had all hands on deck from day one,” Knothe expressed.
Earlier this season, the Saints lost multiple players to injuries, but this opened up an opportunity for Vaughn and Maloney.
“We just kind of took it in our own hands and said we were gonna come up, work hard and play and lead the team together,” Maloney said. “We’re not the only ones leading our team. So, it’s kind of a big role to fill, we’re kind of filling our brother’s shoes as they left too. I think we’ve done a pretty good job at it so far.”
Having played alongside each other for a while, Maloney and Vaughn decided to use that to their advantage.
“We’ve always been playing together so that’s been helping us,” Vaughn said.
Reaffirming what Vaughn said, Maloney expressed, “We kind of go really well together with our different play styles and how we play together, but we’ve always helped each other out on the court.”
They may be young, but age is only a number.
“I don’t really think anybody sees them as a certain grade or grade level or age level,” Knothe said. “And rightly so, kind of view them for their skill and their ability. Kind of just accepted them in that sense rather than, he’s a sophomore, he’s not ready to play yet.”
The Saints return to the hardwood on Friday and will host Dover-Eyota. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
