(ABC 6 News) -- Flashing lights and sirens packed the streets of Blooming Prairie on Friday afternoon.
Its high school football team brought home a special gift this holiday season. The Awesome Blossoms won the Class 1A Minnesota high school football championship for the first time after they beat BOLD 41-15.
Inside the school’s gym, fans cheered them on and left Coach Chad Gimbel speechless.
"It's been a lot of sleepless nights over the last four weeks,” said Gimbel. "It's been a long ride, a long road, a lot of years but you know, I couldn't be more proud of the kids."
And there wasn’t a better way for the team’s seniors to end their high school football career.
"We’re all just really excited,” said senior Karson Vigeland.
"Everybody is really supportive,” said senior Gabe Hagen.
Hagen said the team put in more hours training after a rough defeat at the state semifinals last year.
“This state championship was self-driven by our kids and by our leaders,” Gimbel said.
Vigeland considers the team family.
"We always say we're brothers,” Vigeland said. “We love each other and we did this for each other."
And it’s a day he and his brothers will share forever.
"This is just a great day in Blooming Prairie history,” Vigeland said. “We'll come back together for class reunions and we'll always talk about this day."
Giving pride to a community that looks out for one another.
