(ABC 6 News)- Rochester Lourdes Eagles senior co-captain Clara Billings has one love, and that’s for the sport of hockey.

“It’s the best feeling in the world (being on the ice, playing hockey), just being out there with my friends, wind in your face,” Billings said.  “First love, only love.”

Billing’s love for hockey started at the young age of three years old, now she’s the senior captain for the Lourdes girl’s hockey team, and she’s leading the way.

“Clara is the most valuable player on the ice,” Lourdes Assistant Coach Laura Vannelli said.

“Clara is very talented, she obviously stands out a lot compared to other girls especially our age group,” Senior defenseman Ali Ratzloff said.

“She has really incredible offensive talent,” Vannelli said.  “She’s always making plays for her teammates and she has a knack around the net with a really strong shot.”

“I try to shoot at least 100 pucks a day, wake up early do a little stickhandling before school,” Billings said.

The extra effort has paid off for Clara, she leads the team this season with 23 goals and totals 30 points.

“Clara has one of the best shots in high school hockey,” Vanelli said.

“Before the game, I try to eye out the goalie see what their weak points are,” Billings said.  “We have a really good goalie coach who comes in before the games and tells us where to shoot, so I definitely take that into consideration, but it’s also what lights up on the net when you’re looking.”

“She brings a lot to the table for our team offensively but what’s really special about Clara is she is also really committed to playing defense,” Vannelli said.  “She is one of our strongest defensive players even as a forward, she knows how important it is to our team to play defense.”

Billings will continue playing hockey at Gustavus Adolphus College next year, a Division III university.

The Eagles return to the ice on Friday at Graham Area against Albert Lea.  Puck drops at 5:30 p.m.
