(ABC 6 News)- The 9-time state football champions, Caledonia Warriors added another title in the history books with a 21-0 win over the Barnesville Trojans in the Class AA State Championship game on Friday.
"Our d-line played fast and hard and hit the gaps, and it just freed me up and made it easy. Everyone was playing hard, and we just got it done," Warriors Senior Tight End Evan Denstad said.
"Even though I'm the offensive coordinator, years ago, we made sure the defense came first. If you can't score, it's fine with us, as long as we win, we're ok.," Warriors Head Coach Carl Fruechte said.
The game was slow-moving in the first quarter, both teams held each other scoreless, and it wasn’t until late in the second quarter when Caledonia’s senior running back, Nick McCabe ran it into the end zone, allowing the Warriors to go into halftime ahead 7-0.
On fourth down, late in the fourth quarter, Warriors senior wide receiver, Tate Meiners rushed in for the Warriors second touchdown of the game, Caledonia took a 14-0 lead with 4:30 left in regulation. The Warriors seemed to pick up momentum off that touchdown, with a pick-six by senior wide receiver, Payton Schott, his third interception of the season, per Prep 45 TV.
The Warriors earned their fourth consecutive Class AA State football title win, marking their 54th straight win.
