Caledonia, Minneapolis North Set for Colossal Playoff Game

(ABC 6 News) – The Minnesota High School football playoffs opened on Thursday, but Friday’s Class AA quarterfinal game between the Minneapolis North Polars and Caledonia Warriors may be the game to watch early in the state playoffs.

The Polars have reached the state football tournament each of the past four seasons—but this is the first year during that stretch where they’ll be competing at the Class AA level.

“They're just big and athletic, but we're really excited about it,” Warriors head football coach Carl Fruechte said. “We're glad to have it. If you're a true competitor, those are the games you want and I think you can see, our kids are excited about the game, and we're glad to be playing them."

In total, the Polars (23 games) and Warriors (38 games) have won 61 consecutive games. Since 2014, each program has played in each of the past four state tournaments—during that same stretch, Minneapolis North (47-2 since 2014) has won one state championship (2016, Class A), and the Warriors (50-1 since 2014) are the two-time defending Class AA state champions.

"The kids are really locked in and really focused,” Fruechte said. “I can feel it, the guys are locked in."

Since 2014, in non-forfeited games, the Polars are outscoring their opponents by an average of 29.7 points per game—on the other-hand, Caledonia is averaging 42.2 points per game, and have allowed their opponents to only score 503 total points (9.9 points per game) during that same stretch.

This season, Caledonia’s defense has only allowed 9.4 points per game in 2017.

"Our defense, we just need to keep playing the way we have been the past how many weeks,” Warriors senior outside linebacker and wide receiver Jordan Burg said. “We need to also go make some plays on offense and just go play as a team."

The Polars and Warriors kickoff from Burnsville high school at 7 p.m. on Friday.
