Caledonia Warriors Football: 2018 Focus is on 'Unity'

August 18, 2018 06:39 PM

(ABC 6 News)- The Caledonia Warriors football team is unlike most in Southeast Minnesota. The Warriors have been defending the Class-AA state title for the last three years, and have been undefeated since 2014.

However, reaching the state tournament is not on the top of their priority list when starting a new season, even though that’s the end result they want, the team has been focusing elsewhere.

“Our focus is on getting better, getting ready for Plainview,” Head Coach Carl Fruechte said.  “(It’s) A little bit more about team unity, it’s just what this group needs, more team unity but it’s coming.  We really like what we're seeing on the first three days.  We're tougher than I thought we were, we're mentally and physically tougher than I thought we were and that makes me extremely happy.”

Even after losing their starting quarterback Owen King to graduation the warriors are not worried without Owen since his brother Noah King will be filling his role in the quarterback position.

“We got the same goals, but different people but we got the same philosophy as we always have and he's Owen's brother we have just as much faith in him as we did Owen's,” Warriors Senior Defensive End Ryan Wagner said.  “We trust each other, we always know what everybody else is doing, (and) we always trust that they are going to be doing their job.”

“(I am) Just really proud of how he’s leading (Noah King),” Fruechte said.  “When making a mistake he’s like ‘hey my bad I’m going to do better’.  (Also) Just how he’s rallying the team around him just trying to get all the throws down and he’s really just doing a great job with the leadership and I couldn't be happier.”

Wagner feels he and the rest of the Warriors set themselves apart by the ‘hard work and dedication that everyone has’ and the ‘brotherhood that everyone shares.’

The Warriors open up the season on the road against the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs on Friday, August 31.
