(ABC 6 News) – On Saturday afternoon, the four-seed Warriors fell 72-63 to the three-seed Minnehaha Redhawks in the state girls’ basketball tournament Class AA championship.
In the first-half, Minnehaha’s defense was all over Caledonia, but that didn’t intimidate the Warriors. Caledonia stayed neck-and-neck with Minnehaha, even taking the lead halfway through the first.
Then the Warriors offensive struggles began and the Redhawks jumped at the opportunity. Heading into halftime Minnehaha was up 33-27.
Coming out of halftime, both teams amped up their game, especially Caledonia, while the Barn came alive with cheers and chants from all over the arena.
Down by six to start the second, Caledonia powered their way back to take the lead. However, the Redhawks came back with even more power and to take the lead back, securing their win over the Warriors.
Leading the way for Caledonia was senior Ashley Schroeder who finished the afternoon with 21. Behind her was senior Katie Tornstrom who had 19. Also scoring in double digits was senior Kaitlin Conniff who totaled 16.
Granted this was not the outcome the Warriors had hoped for, but the opportunity to play together on this magnitude, was something several of the seniors, and head coach Scott Sorenson, was happy about.
"It feels good to get here and play one more with my sisters," Tornstrom said about their time at state.
During the post-game press conference, Sorenson had to hold back tears when expressing what this team, and the senior class, means to him.
“I just love them,” Sorenson said emotionally. “I’m proud of them. Very proud of them.”
Then when the seniors were asked how they will reflect on their high school careers, Schroeder chimed in about the team’s time at the state tournament.
"It's just an amazing opportunity,” Schroeder expressed. "Even though we lost, it was really awesome to get to play up here with that kind of energy and feel about it. Looking back on it and knowing we played that hard, I don't really have any regrets."
Following Saturday's championship game, Schroeder, Tornstrom and senior Heidi Bolduan were named to the Class AA All-Tournament Team.
