AUSTIN, Minn. - Despite throwing 38 shots on goal, the Bruins couldn't find the back of the net as the Brookings Blizzard earned the victory by a score of 2-0.
It was a game that felt much like Friday night, with both teams feeling each other out during much of the first period and once again, both teams would head to the lockers scoreless after twenty minutes.
Unlike Friday night, the Bruins weren't the first team to strike. Halfway through the second period, Blizzard defenseman Brendan Aird slid a backhand shot through the underarm of Bruin goalie Kyle McClellan for the first goal of the game. It would remain the only goal scored in the game until the final seven seconds when Nicklas Andrews score his first goal of the season, an empty-netter, to ice the game.
The Bruins didn't go down without a fight, however. The team peppered Brookings goalie George McBey with shots, 38 in total. They had opportunities from in close, from the outside, from the points, and even on the rush, but each time McBey shut them down.
During the course of the game, both teams were able to kill off all of their penalties, something neither team could do on Friday with all five goals in that game coming on the power-play. On Saturday, either team could get a goal with the man advantage.
With the loss, the Bruins slide to 21-9-0-3 on the season and still occupy second place in the Central Division. For the Blizzard, the win snaps a streak of 15 straight losses improving their record to 4-28-2-0. The Blizzard now have 11 standings points, the last team in the NAHL to hit double digits, and sit in last place in the Central Division.
Up next for the Bruins, they welcome the division-leading Aberdeen Wings Riverside Arena for back to back games on Friday and Saturday Night. On Saturday, it's Bruiser's Birthday Celebration with plenty of local mascots in attendance to celebrate everyone's favorite bear. Tickets go on sale Monday, January 7 for both games next weekend and can be purchased at all of the Bruins vendors including Games People Play, Hy-Vee, Holiday Inn, and Jim's Marketplace.
