(ABC 6 News) – The Austin Packers put together an outstanding run to their first Section 1AAA title in 11 years, but the magic has run out for the Packers.
In Wednesday’s Class AAA Quarterfinals at the Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, the Packers lost to no.2 seed Robbinsdale Cooper, 72-40.
The Hawks, the defending Class AA state champions, raced ahead to a 16-point halftime lead over the Packers, and Austin couldn’t inch any closer after that.
"I thought we played well until the game started getting out of hand. We were in that for the first half, and then the last five-six minutes of the first half, things started getting away from us a little bit," Austin head coach Eric Zoske said. "We make some of those shots early on, don't come out with those nerves, we put a little more pressure on the defending state champions and we just didn't get that ball to go in soon enough. You combine size, speed, and shooting, that's the recipe for a championship season, and that's what they are until somebody beats them."
"Our team was just really positive and supportive the whole time and our student section (was great)," Packers senior Abby Lewis added. "I'm just really happy and proud of everyone."
Hawks' senior guard Aja Wheeler scored 22 points, while Lewis scored a team-high 15 points for the Packers. Hawks sophomore forward Kierra Wheeler added 19 points and 13 rebounds.
With the win, the Hawks will play Becker in Thursday’s Class AAA semifinals. With the loss, the Packers move to the Class AAA Consolation bracket, where they'll play Marshall. The Class AAA Consolation Championships will be held at Concordia University in St. Paul.
