(ABC 6 News) – Once again, it wasn’t easy for the Austin Packers, but for a third consecutive season, they’re heading back to the Class AAA state boys basketball tournament.

The Packers edged the Northfield Raiders in Thursday’s Section 1AAA Championship, 57-54.

Near the end of regulation, the Packers held a five-point lead before Northfield trimmed that lead to as little as two points. Despite a few missed free throws by the Packers, keeping the Raiders in the game, one of Northfield’s last-second three-point attempts were blocked by Austin’s Teyghan Hovland, and their second attempt was well-defended, punching the Packers ticket to Minneapolis.

"I strive for perfection with our kids, I didn't like the missed free throws. I'm still burning about that,” Packers head coach Kris Fadness said after the game. “I thought some things could've been handled better on our part. Northfield is a very good team. Physically, they beat us around the basket pretty good. Our kids, defensively, they stepped it up down the stretch. We got to their shooters, scrambled for loose balls, and somehow got it done."

The Packers have now won three consecutive Section 1AAA championships—all of those championship wins have come against the Raiders. In total, Austin has won nine straight games against Northfield.

In 2017, the Packers reached the Class AA A state championship game before falling to DeLaSalle. In 2018, they took a step backwards, falling to Delano in the Class AAA state semifinals.

"A lot of emotions are going through my head. I'm very excited to go back,” Austin senior Medi Obang, who finished with 15 points, said. “Obviously, we are trying to (take care of) some unfinished business which we didn't do last year.”

Austin will await their Class AAA state tournament fate. The Minnesota state boys basketball tournament begins on Wednesday.
