(ABC 6 News)- The Zumbrota-Mazeppa girls basketball team pulled off an early-season upset last weekend, creating a memorable moment, especially for their sophomore forward.

“She is very versatile, she can shoot, she can drive, she can rebound, she can play defense, she does basically everything.  Ali is an amazing person, she’s a great teammate, everything she does is to the best of her ability,” Head Coach Andy Bromeling said.

Ali is Ali Hunstad, a sophomore forward for the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars, who is already ahead of the curve.

Hunstad has learned a lot from playing the game of basketball, especially from her head coach.

“(Coach has taught me) just to be smart, basketball IQ is a huge thing,” Hunstad said.

On Friday, Hunstad proved she isn’t just smart, she’s also clutch.  She hit the game-winning shot over previously second-ranked Minnehaha Academy, leading the Cougars to an upset win 69-67.

“I didn’t really think about it at the time, I didn’t realize how many seconds were left on the clock, I was open, my teammates got me the ball, (and) I happened to be open at that time,” Hunstad said.  “I actually don’t think my coach wanted me to take it, I think one of the guards passed it to me (because) I was open on the elbow but I was lucky it went it.”

“I was actually telling her not to shoot the ball,” Bromeling said.  “I was actually telling her to relax because there was eight seconds left, I wanted her to take the shot at the end however she was wide open.  You can’t ask a shooter not to take that shot, so I was happy and thankful that she took the shot.”

Hunstad led the team that night with a double-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals.

“She’s only a sophomore, so if she continues to grow like that she can be amazing,” Bromeling said.

Hunstad and The Cougars return to the court on Thursday at home against Lake City at 7:15p.m.
