(ABC 6 News) - Byron's Sacia Vanderpool has used her height and skillset to earn a chance to play Big Ten basketball, becoming a fourth-generation Wisconsin Badger.
Vanderpool is hard to miss when she's on the court, regardless of volleyball or basketball. Measuring in at 6 feet 4 inches tall, her height makes her a force to be reckoned with. But it's not just her height that caught the attention of college coaches across the country.
"She can really shoot the ball. She has phenomenal range for a big kid," Sacia's AAU coach Tylor Coley said. "We can step a couple feet outside the 3-point line and shoot the ball at the women's game. That's how talented she is out there."
Coley told Vanderpool a few years ago that she was going to get a lot of attention from college coaches when she got older, and he was right. In the past few months schools like Texas Tech and LSU have given her offers, but the Vanderpools were waiting on one thing: an offer from Wisconsin. The wait paid off as she announced her commitment to Wisconsin on Friday.
"This always felt like it was kind of meant to be because my dad went there and his generation. It's really cool and exciting just to have that opportunity to carry it on," Vanderpool said.
Madison is over three hours from Byron, but Vanderpool isn't worried about the distance. With so much family history there, she says she'll feel right at home.
