(ABC 6 NEWS) - School supplies can cost a lot and in Olmsted County, The United Way's "Running Start for Schools" program is helping families trying to make ends meet.

The program has been around since the early nineties. Students receive a backpack filled with school supplies needed for the upcoming school year. The program helps kids at 38 schools in Olmsted County.

"Making sure that kids have those resources and those supplies, I think brings a sense of normalcy to our students and our families. And I also think that it is just one less bill for families to worry about," Impact program manager, Grace Pesch said.

The backpack distribution starts this week for schools. Donations can be made by clicking here.

For families that are still looking for deals for heading back to school this fall, Target and Walmart have similar prices for many of the essential items. Pencils, Rulers, Crayons, and other common items range under a dollar at both Target and Walmart. Both stores also have an option to search for your child's school supply list by zip code under the back to school section on their websites.

Amazon also has school supply kits. These range in size and products, some offer backpacks, with the common items needed like notebooks, pens, and highlighters. You can search your child's grade and school supply kit on Amazon to easily find these. They are anywhere from $25 to $35 online.

Many schools have face masks on the list, local stores, as well as big-box stores like Target and Walmart, offer these in different sizes and designs.
