A Rochester teenager was taken to the hospital with significant injuries following a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday, February 23.
Around 10:22 p.m., Rochester Police said 34-year-old Sterling Haukom was driving a Ford F-150 north on 8th Ave. when his truck reportedly went through the intersection of 12th St. SE and hit a Volkswagen Passat traveling east.
Police said the impact sent both vehicles into a pole on the NE corner of the intersection before hitting a fence near Lincoln Elementary School.
The 18-year-old driver of the Passat was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus with significant injuries. The name of the teenager has not been released.
Police said both drivers appeared to have been wearing their seatbelts.
A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw after officers said it appeared Haukom showed signs of alcohol intoxication. Results of that blood draw have not been released.
Haukom was taken to Saint Marys before being transferred to the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center.
He faces a potential charge of criminal vehicular operation. Police said the charge could change depending on the status of the victim.
