(ABC 6 NEWS) – Some local medical students have officially started their new elective called "Street Medicine."

28 students at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine are a part of this initiative by the Zumbro Valley Medical Society.

The students are learning ‘street’ appropriate approaches to common health conditions of people experiencing homelessness.

"We’re trying to come into it just with an open sort of humble mind and want to learn about this community and then maybe how we as medical students we can contribute in a way that is hopefully of service to a potentially vulnerable community," Second-year medical student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, Jeffery Woods said.

The students will serve the Landing MN with this program until May.
