(ABC 6 News) - The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that deputies wrote 196 speeding citations in July 2022 -- more than double the number written in July 2021.

Between July 1 and 31, law enforcement personnel conducted 271 traffic stops and cited 196 of the drivers.

In July of 2021, officers wrote 96 citations.

Capt. James Schueller with the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said the increase in arrests was part of the Toward Zero Deaths initiative in Minnesota.

Notable stops, according to Schueller, included a 50-year-old man riding a motorcycle at 105 mph on East Circle Drive, an 18-year-old traveling at 111 mph in a 55 zone while "trying out his new clutch," and a 24-year-old driving at 130 mph in a 55 zone while "showing off to his four teenage passengers."

"That could have ended really badly," Schueller said. "Gladly, (it) just ended in a traffic stop and a citation for speed."

Schueller said there were also four custodial arrests in July -- one for an individual on a warrant, one for an individual with a warrant and drugs on their person, a third for a driver whose license had been canceled for the safety of the public, and a 31-year-old woman with three DWI arrests in three months.
