(ABC 6 News) - Spark Children's Museum hosted Mayo Clinic's GLOW group Sunday.

There were educational, hands-on activities for children that put their construction skills to the test while building bridges, experimenting with a catapult and making slime. The organizers, Ashley Xiong and Allison Drees, say they are using real-life situations to teach kids basic principles of science.

"It's a great opportunity for them to experience the basic principles of science that hopefully will encourage them to later on in life continue to foster that interest and then grow into future scientists," Xiong, co-chair of the STEM committee at Mayo Clinic, said.

The GLOW STEM group aims to promote, educate and empower women through professional development activities. The group focuses on outreach to community groups and schools to promote women in STEM careers.

This was a part of Spark's Free First Sunday program where admission is free to all on the first Sunday of every month.
