(ABC 6 News) - Rochester Public Schools has announced its Return to Learn plans for the 2020-2021 school year. The plan was discussed in greater detail during the School Board meeting August 10 and approved.

"Throughout the entire school year, RPS will use guidance from state and local health department officials, local medical experts and Minnesota Department of Education to advise our practices," said Superintendent Munoz in a letter to parents released Friday afternoon.

"This year's return to school will come with some new protocols and procedures in order to keep everyone safe and healthy."

According to the base model outlined in the letter:

  • Most elementary students (Pre K - grade 5) and Lincoln K-8 students will receive face-to-face instruction two days per week and distance learning three days per week.
  • Most secondary students (grades 6 - 12) will participate in distance learning five days per week. There will be opportunities for secondary students to receive in-person support by appointment, in areas such as academics, technology, and mental health.

The letter says RPS students can choose to participate in full-time distance learning if they are medically vulnerable or otherwise unwilling to return to school in the hybrid model.
