(ABC 6 News) -- An 18-year-old from Rochester faces a second-degree arson charge after Rochester Police said he lit flammable materials and put them into dryers at a Rochester apartment complex.

In the early morning hours of May 8, police and other emergency crews responded to a dryer fire at an apartment complex located at 897 16th Ave. SE.

According to RPD, people in the area said they had witnessed a person trying to get into cars in the parking lot.

Police said the people confronted the person and may have assaulted him.

The group told police that the man said he would come back and do harm to the building.

Later on the 8th, another dryer fire was reported at the same apartment complex.

By this time, people in the area said they had seen the person they believed was responsible for the fires in the area and gave a description to the police.

Officers were able to locate the man, 18-year-old Lawrence Johnson, about a block away from the apartment complex.

Police said Johnson smelled like smoke and admitted to being on the property but said he did not set the fires.

Officers said they found five lighters on Johnson.

He was taken to the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center and is facing a second-degree arson charge.
