(ABC 6 News) - Steve DeBoer holds a world record for running at least a mile a day for fifty years. Nothing has stopped him, not even the weather or being sick.

It started out as a way to make the junior high basketball team and it's now a lifestyle for DeBoer. 50 years later and 66 marathons in the books.

"When I was in junior high school, I wanted to get in better shape to play basketball and so I started running a little bit, and then I got cut from the basketball team. Then I thought, well, running is not that bad, maybe I'll start doing it more," DeBoer said.

He now holds the record for the third longest-running streak in the world for running at least a mile a day.

"Once I start doing something, I like to be doing it consistently and so I started running every day when I was just after tenth grade and here I am over 50 years later, still doing it," DeBoer said.

DeBoer typically runs eight to twelve miles a day, even when he only needs to run at least one to keep the streak alive.

Although not every day is easy, he has never missed one.

"Yeah, some days you have a few more aches and pains than others and you go a little slower and you think 'I'm still enjoying this aren't I?,'" DeBoer said.

Not even the Minnesota weather or being underwater has stopped him.

"Okay, I don't enjoy it 100 percent of the time, we'll put it that way," DeBoer said.

Now that he has reached this milestone, he's still hoping for more.

"I've run over 173,000 miles and my goal is to get to the distance to the moon which is a little over 216,000 so, 43,000 to go," DeBoer said.

He also hopes to follow in his father's footsteps, running until he is 85 years old, saying he wants to keep it going because he wants to see how his body does.

"So far I'm holding okay," DeBoer said.
