(ABC 6 News)-- Days after the bodies of 23-year old Keona Foote, and her daughter Miyona Miller was found by family members, the community is still trying to wrap their minds around their tragic deaths.
"I'd never expect this to happen, not in this complex. As soon as I pulled up and saw the cop cars and everything, my mind was just blown," said Nathan Ziegler, who has been a resident at Olympik Village for the past two years.
Ziegler said the community is fairly quiet, and people stay to themselves. He said he had never seen the couple before, but he still couldn't have seen something like this happening so close.
Driving through the neighborhood, Keona's uncle Dion Mason happened to also be driving through the area. He said he's still trying to process the loss of his two niece's, and remembering how he discovered the two, has not stopped playing in his mind.
Mason said the boyfriend and suspected killer, Renard Carter, had previously assaulted Keona. He said he'd choked her before and popped blood vessels in her eyes. Olmsted County District Attorney Mark Ostrem said Carter had been sentenced to 21 months in prison for a domestic assault back in 2018. He was released in April 2020.
"Carter is not somebody that is unknown to us and in fact," said Ostrem.
Carter has been released from the hospital in Columbia South Carolina after being shot by law enforcement the night of his arrest. It was last reported that Carter was booked in a South Carolina facility awaiting extradition back to Minnesota. An exact date for when Carter will be back in Rochester has not been released.
