(ABC 6 News) - Monday, the Rochester City Council approved the purchase of up to four 60-foot battery electric buses and charging equipment for Rochester Public Transit.

The contract is with New Flyer North America with buses and charging equipment with expected delivery in late fall this year.

This investment by the City of Rochester in renewable fuels and sustainable transit is funded mainly through federal grants. Local matching funds will come from RPT’s operating fund balance.

The Federal Transit Administration awarded the City of Rochester two grants under the Low- or No-Emission Bus Program, one in 2018 for $2.29 million, and one in 2020 for $3.15 million. Each of the two grants specified two 60-foot, battery electric buses and charging equipment.

Rochester Mayor Kim Norton lauded the council action, saying, “This purchase is a big step towards a future in which renewable fuels will play a bigger role in public transit in Rochester. I signed the Mayor’s Sustainability Pledge because I understand that decisions like this one can make a substantial positive impact on our environment and the future of our planet.”
